# Record a meeting

*Updated 2026-10-20*

The desktop app records whatever your Mac plays and hears — Zoom, Teams,
Meet, a phone call through your computer — with no bot joining the call.

## Start and stop

Any of these:

- Press **R** in the app.
- Choose **Start meeting** from the menu-bar icon.
- Use the floating recorder.

By default meaty records your **microphone and system audio**. To record
only your microphone, turn on **Record microphone only** in settings.

If system audio can't be captured, meaty keeps going with the microphone,
says **Microphone only — system audio unavailable**, and sends a
notification. See [Desktop troubleshooting](/docs/desktop-troubleshooting).

## The floating recorder

While recording, a small recorder floats on top of other windows, at the
bottom right of the screen you're on. It never takes focus from your call,
and you can drag it anywhere.

Expand it to see:

- the template chip for this meeting;
- a briefing — who's attending, open follow-ups, previous meetings with
  them;
- a box for your own notes;
- pause and resume.

## Meeting detection (optional)

meaty can ask **Are you in a meeting?** when it notices one starting — from
your calendar, a meeting app coming to the front, or the microphone going
live — and can start recording after a short countdown. It's off unless you
turn it on.

## If the connection drops

You need a connection to **start** a recording. If it drops **during** one,
nothing is lost: the audio is kept on your Mac and sent when you're back
online. Recordings waiting are listed under **On this computer**, with
**Process now** and **Delete**.

## If your microphone disconnects

The recording pauses and keeps everything so far. Click **Reconnect** to
carry on.

## After the meeting

Notes appear in the app's library — the same library as the
[web app](/docs/get-around-your-notes).
