# Install the desktop app

*Updated 2026-10-20*

The desktop app is meaty's full experience on a Mac: it records any meeting
on your computer — mic and system audio — with a small floating recorder,
and holds your whole library.

**You need:** macOS 14.6 or newer, on Apple Silicon or Intel.

## Download and install

1. Download meaty for Mac: *(To be confirmed.)*
2. Open the downloaded file and move **meaty** into **Applications**.
3. Open meaty. The app is signed and notarized by Apple.

Click sign in. Your browser opens; sign in there and you're taken back to
the app automatically.

## Permissions

macOS asks for these the first time they're needed:

| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| **Microphone** | Your voice. |
| **System Audio Recording** | The other people on the call — the sound coming out of your Mac. |
| **Accessibility** (optional) | Reads speaker names from the meeting app, so transcripts are labelled with real names. |

Turned the microphone off? meaty shows **Microphone access is off — Turn it
on in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone.**

## The menu bar

meaty adds an icon to the menu bar: **Open meaty**, **Start meeting**, your
upcoming calendar meetings, the version, and **Quit**.
**⌘ + ⇧ + M** shows or hides the main window. To have meaty start with your
Mac, turn on **Open at login** in its settings.

## Updates

meaty checks for updates when it opens and every six hours. When one is
ready: **meaty {version} is ready to install.** — click **Update and
restart**, or **Later**. Updates are never offered while you're recording.

**Next:** [Record a meeting](/docs/record-on-desktop).
