# Install on your phone

*Updated 2026-10-20*

The phone recorder is a web app you install from your browser. Once
installed it sits on your home screen as **meaty**, opens full screen, and is
ready to record with one tap.

## Before you start

- Open **meaty.me** in your phone's browser and sign in — with Google, with
GitHub, or with your email and a password.
- Supported browsers: *(To be confirmed.)*

## iPhone

1. Open meaty.me and sign in. A banner reads **Tap Share then Add to Home
   Screen**.
2. Tap the **Share** button, then **Add to Home Screen**.
   *(To be confirmed.)*
3. Confirm. meaty appears on your home screen.

## Android

1. Open meaty.me in Chrome and sign in. A banner reads **Install meaty — Add
to your home screen for one-tap access**.
2. Tap **Install** and confirm.

Dismissed the banner? It doesn't come back on that device. Use the browser's
own install option instead:
*(To be confirmed.)*

## Allow the microphone

Your phone asks for microphone access the first time you tap record. Allow
it. If you said no, meaty shows **Microphone access is needed to record.** —
see [Phone troubleshooting](/docs/phone-troubleshooting) to turn it back on.

## Updates

meaty updates itself in the background. When a new version is ready, a strip
says **A newer meaty is ready. Update when you have a second.** — tap
**Update**, or **Not now** to keep going. If you're recording, it waits until
you stop.

Your current version is under **Account → Version**.

## Good to know

- **Android only:** share an audio file to meaty from another app's share
sheet to import it (up to 200 MB). iPhone doesn't offer this.
- **Notifications on iPhone** work only in the installed app, on iOS 16.4 or
  newer.
