# How notes are made

*Updated 2026-10-20*

## From recording to notes

When you stop, meaty:

1. **Transcribes** the whole recording, telling speakers apart.
2. **Writes the notes**: a short title, a one-line description, the summary,
action items with owners and due dates, names for the speakers, and the
   meeting type.
3. **Finishes in the background**: matches the meeting to your
[calendar](/docs/google-calendar), applies a template, and sends it to
any [integrations](/docs/slack) set to send automatically.

Which providers do the transcription and writing is listed in the
[privacy policy](/legal).

## What a meeting holds

| Tab | Contents |
|---|---|
| **Summary** | The notes, shaped by the template |
| **Actions** | Action items — see [Tasks](/docs/tasks) |
| **Transcript** | Everything said, by speaker |
| **Chat** | Ask questions about the meeting |

On a computer there's also a **Notes** pad for your own notes, which stay
private to you.

## Templates

A template decides the shape of the summary: a sentence of context plus up
to twelve sections. meaty comes with ten — among them Client consultation,
Coaching session, Lesson, 1:1 / check-in, Intake interview, Job interview,
Daily stand-up and Team sync.

- **Choosing one before recording:** the template chip on the phone, in the
Chrome extension, or on the desktop app's floating recorder.
- **Left alone,** meaty uses the template from the last meeting in the same
[series](/docs/library-and-search#series), or picks one that fits.
- **Changing it afterwards** (web and desktop app): apply another template
and the summary is rewritten from the transcript. No re-recording.
- **Your own templates:** duplicate one of meaty's and edit the copy —
  meaty's own can't be edited.

Templates shape the summary only. Action items are always extracted the
same way.

## Correcting the notes

- **Speak a correction** — say what's wrong, for the whole meeting or just
the action items, and meaty rewrites them.
- **Rename the title** and **change the meeting type**.
- **Fix a misheard word** everywhere in the meeting at once.
- **Fix speakers** — see [Speakers and people](/docs/speakers-and-people).

The summary can't be typed into directly; spoken corrections and templates
are how it changes.
